This practice started in Europe and quickly spread to Japan where it became a respected art form with photographers often teaming with an artist. Flash forward to the United States where photo studio hired young single women as colorist. The best selling hand colorized photographer of all time, was Wallace Nutting, a New England minister who took his hobby and turned it into a full time business that spanned nearly 40 years. It's been noted that Nutting sold millions of his colorized images grossing his company nearly $1000 a day.

For those who think colorization removes the historical value from an image, think of it as placing history into the present as you stand shoulder to shoulder with the photographer as he focuses in on his subject matter, which was in color.

Flash forward to my mission: Using various software programs with modern technology, a few years of trial and error, and I'm off to colorize as many black & white images as possible. This task ls more than simply colorizing, it requires preparing the images by adjusting light levels, contrast, shadowing and eliminating haze from images created by the glass plate negatives. After that there is the research to create the proper era color palette. Personal note, images can take from a few hours to many days to complete. It's not a hobby for the impatient minded.

PRODUCT DETAILS
Publication Date: 2019
Publisher: Tim Wager
Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 11 x .125 inches
Format: Soft Cover
Pages: 48
Photos: 49

Union Soldier of the American Civil War; A Visual Reference
As the year 1862 began, the war that most Americans thought would only last a few months showed no signs of ending. But some locals refused to comply, and inept law enforcement led to ineffective consequences. What was intended to increase wholesomeness forced a newly carved detour toward crime and corruption. Early laws, such as the Liquor Law of 1853, targeted distilled spirits while conveniently protecting cider. As regulations tightened, morals loosened. Without legalized booze, smugglers imported liquor from Canada, and bootleggers ensured that domestic speakeasies kept the liquor flowing. Crime ran so rampant that Newport, Richford and Lyndonville residents relocated to escape rum-running gangs. During the late 1800s, the marble industry flourished and the mighty Vermont Marble Company was started by a local family. The patriarch of the Proctor family built the Vermont Marble Company into the largest stone company in the world. They hired immigrant workers to fuel the company, and the region became a melting pot of nationalities. The community developed in the 1760s, when European American settlers established homes in the river valley. Brattleboro was ideal for settlement because of its topography. The Whetstone Brook, which runs from the foothills of the Green Mountains through Brattleboro, provided a major source of waterpower, and the Connecticut River offered an ideal transportation route for sending finished products via flat-bottomed boat to market in southern New England and New York. Brattleboro presents the story of its people, who from the beginning have exhibited and benefited from a positive philosophy toward life. In the mid-1800s, railroad service came to the area and Brattleboro developed as a center for commerce, health spas, and literary activities. Factories manufacturing organs, toys, and furniture thrived. Printing and publishing industries, as well as literary societies flourished. The day would ultimately turn the tide for the Patriot cause. After capturing Fort Ticonderoga, the British, under Lieutenant General John Burgoyne, pursued a retreating Continental army under Major General Arthur St. Clair. In the fields and hills around Hubbardton, a tenacious American rear guard of about 1,200 derailed the British general's plan for a quick march to Albany. The British won a tactical victory, but they suffered precious losses. Patriots, under Colonel Seth Warner, Colonel Ebenezer Francis and Colonel Nathan Hale, left the British and Germans bloodied while also saving untold casualties from their own army.
