The catalogue is written by Kenneth Joel Zogry and edited by Philip Zea, Curator of Historic Deerfield, Inc., with a foreward by Wendell Garrett, Senior Vice President of Sotheby’s and editor emeritus of The Magazine, ANTIQUES.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlong with formal styles, some Vermont furniture is also “country,” including brilliantly painted examples and pieces made with the vibrant local woods such as maple and birch. “The challenge,” says Zogry, “was to properly understand the early history of the state, and then search major museums, local historical societies, and private homes for unique examples of early Vermont furniture.” Over three-quarters of the objects in the catalogue publication have never before been seen by the public.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor years collectors and curators have studied the antique American furniture of cities such as Boston or Philadelphia, or the country furniture of Connecticut and New Hampshire, yet Vermont has been virtually ignored,” says Kenneth Joel Zogry, Bennington Museum’s former Curator of Collections. “Although today a small and rural state, Vermont was actually one of the fastest growing areas of the country between 1760 and 1820. This Art died out shortly after WWII with new developments in color print processing, but is seeing a comeback thanks to the numerous computer software programs coming on to the market today.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlmost every image shown here is cropped from the original Black \u0026amp; White glass plate negative. This expands the finer details which would otherwise be lost in the background. The dates given in the comments are those used to identify the dates of service in the Bennington area for each photographer and NOT necessarily the date the photo was taken. If a known date is available, it will be placed at the beginning of the comment. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBecause I wasn't around 120 years ago, the colors I used are my personal preference in what I envision they would have been. This practice started in Europe and quickly spread to Japan where it became a respected art form with photographers often teaming with an artist. Flash forward to the United States where photo studio hired young single women as colorist. The best selling hand colorized photographer of all time, was Wallace Nutting, a New England minister who took his hobby and turned it into a full time business that spanned nearly 40 years. It's been noted that Nutting sold millions of his colorized images grossing his company nearly $1000 a day. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor those who think colorization removes the historical value from an image, think of it as placing history into the present as you stand shoulder to shoulder with the photographer as he focuses in on his subject matter, which was in color. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFlash forward to my mission: Using various software programs with modern technology, a few years of trial and error, and I'm off to colorize as many black \u0026amp; white images as possible. This task ls more than simply colorizing, it requires preparing the images by adjusting light levels, contrast, shadowing and eliminating haze from images created by the glass plate negatives. After that there is the research to create the proper era color palette. Personal note, images can take from a few hours to many days to complete. She was born in New York City in 1932, the daughter of the painter Alice Trumbull Mason, an early exponent of non-objective abstraction and a founder of the American Abstract Artists group in 1937. Emily Mason first came to Vermont in 1950 to attend Bennington College, in a deliberate attempt to “break away from New York” and “to think things out for myself.” After two years at Bennington, she transferred to Cooper Union in New York City, to get closer to where the action was. She still lives in New York, but since 1968 she and her husband, the painter Wolf Kahn, have owned a property outside Brattleboro, Vermont, where they spend their summers and each has a studio.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThrough her mother, Mason knew all the major Abstract Expressionist painters in New York City. She remembers being shocked by their work, not understanding what they were doing. Seeing the traveling retrospective of Jackson Pollock’s work in Rome in 1958 forced her to come to grips with his “all over” painting composed of drips and splashes. She visited Joan Mitchell in her Paris studio in the late 1950s, finding the latter’s work both deeply unsettling and inspirational. She admired Mitchell as another woman who was “finding her own voice” within the broad stream of abstraction.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe works in this exhibition, which focuses on the decade 1958-1968, show Mason developing her own unique style as she moved beyond Abstract Expressionism, which was based in gesture and movement, to create an abstraction of pure color laid down in delicate veils and washes of thinned oil paint, layered so that they explore effects of transparency and opacity, variegated textures, and complex color interactions. Oil on paper proved to be a perfect medium for her experiments. The small size of the works, quick drying time of the diluted oils, and portability of the materials meant these works could serve as a laboratory for innovation. By 1968 she had achieved an exquisite mastery of her materials.
