Bliss-'Basket'(8 Over 8 Spoke Star Bottom), Handmade Basket with Handle
'Basket'(8 Over 8 Spoke Star Bottom), Handmade Basket with Handle Bliss White McIntosh
The rigid handle 8 over 8 spoke star bottom basket is woven with very fine black ash splint, weaving two wheels of 8 spokes together to create a very strong bottom. It was also used for harvesting fruit or vegetables.
The black ash for weaving is hand pounded from the log and then split and smoothed by hand. The white ash or hickory for the rims and handles is split out and carved with draw knife and bent while still green. The finished baskets contain only plant material and can last for generations, even with practical use. All of the baskets are meant to be used in their traditional ways, whether for carrying, serving food, gathering vegetables, storing crops or picking berries.
ARTIST BIO: Bliss White McIntosh has been making traditionally inspired baskets in her home town of Cambridge NY since 1977, using black ash splint, birch bark and elm bark. She harvests all of her own foraged materials. Her first teachers were Mary Tilley of Ashfield MA and Leona Haubrich in New Hampshire, but antique baskets and the peculiarities of each year’s harvest of materials continue to show her the way forward.
