'Grossular Garnets' Art Print

Inspired by a visit to Bennington Museum’s exhibition Vermont Rocks! in the fall of 2024, Renowned mineral artist Fred Wilda created a new watercolor featuring five specimens of the world famous grossular garnets found at the Belvidere Mountain quarries. The grossular garnet is the Vermont State gemstone.

Wilda selected a group of grossular specimens, in collaboration with Ken Carlsen, a retired Mount Anthony Union High School earth science teacher who has written extensively on the mineralogy of the locality, that illustrate the variety of the garnet specimens that came from the locality.

The background of the image is inspired by the massive tailings, or waste piles, left behind at the old quarry site, composed largely of grey rodingite, the rocks in which the grossular forms. This was considered the chaff that was separated from the asbestos minerals that they were mining.
