Franklin & Nevin: 'Patience to Raise the Sun'
Patience to Raise the Sun: Art Quilts from Haiti & their Power to Change Women's Lives
Quilting is both a solitary and social activity. It provides a time to work alone, in quiet, and a time to work with friends, in conversation. It is both craft and art. One cannot tell if a quilter expirences greater joy looking over a freshly finished quilt, or laying out freshly pressed fabrics for a piece to be created.
PeaceQuilts began as an idea to teach Haitian women a marketable skill, one that could provide an income to support the quilters and their families. It has now become a non-profit, all volunteer humanitarian organization that assists in the development of quilting cooperatives in Haiti. PeaceQuilts' volunteers raise funds, collect quilting materials and supplies, and provide direct training and support to cooperative members in Haiti. The goal is to nuture these cooperatives until they are self-directed and self-sustaining. All proceeds from the sale of the quilts go directly to the quilters and further the work of PeaceQuilts to relieve pverty in Haiti.
