A Guide to The Battle of Bennington and The Bennington Monument- 2nd Edition This is the story of the Battle of Bennington and the iconic Monument that commemorates the Patriot victory on August 16, 1777. On that day American militiamen from New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts, aided at a critical moment by the Continental regiment known as the Green Mountain Boys, defeated a combined British, German, Loyalist, Canadian, and Native force at Waloomsac, N.Y., and helped change the course of the Revolutionary War.

PHIL HOLLAND is a graduate of Bennington College and holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of London. A retired high school and college teacher and administrator, he is the author of Robert Frost in Bennington County (3rd edition, 2023), The Dance Must Follow (poetry, with photographs by Moses Pendleton, 2015), Better English (with M. Ziglina and L. Koufaki, 2011), articles on the history of Bennington, and dramatic monologues for some of its dead. He lives in Pownal, Vermont, and serves on the Board of the Friends of the Bennington Battlefield.
